Subject: VERY SERIOUS MATTER

Attn : ADMIN

I the undersigned is unsure if this is the correct email address to write about a very serious issue ,in the event this is not the case then I would request to forward the same to the concerned HOD.

The incident took place in Reliance Santacruz ( west ) Super market , Date: 5th of May 2013, Time 1130 hrs .

After parking the vehicle on the lower level basement I and my wife entered the lift which had 7 people already inside . The door had closed and we waited for the lift to arrive on the ground floor . After a while the door opened however the lift had not moved and opened on the same level. At this stage everyone laughed and again the door closed .

This time neither did the lift move NOR DID THE DOOR  OPEN.

Ventilation /AC had stopped . The air was getting less and less breathing was a becoming a serious problem . Some of us were banging the door . THE EMERGENCY ALARM WAS NONFUNCTIONAL. Among the occupants there was an infant and self  with an existing Heart condition.

One of the person assured us that his brother was outside and that he would surely do something . We were scared of dehydration too as the heat inside was unbearable and all of us gasping for breath.Eventually the door opened and the person responsible for opening the door was NO ONE FROM RELIANCE  but another CUSTOMER . This person had got a long screwdriver from his car tool box .

Once we were out of the lift the observations I made was very scary

1) The security man was completely unmoved and was carrying out his duty of parking the cars as usual . He did mention that he has informed someone about the problem.

2) After 15 minutes  we meet the Manager at the ground floor level with  no sense of urgency ,it appeared that he was not aware of the situation.

Meanwhile since there was no reaction from the staff the brother of the person inside the lift had called for Police help and the Police arrived the scene the same time the Manager arrived.

On enquiring further the following was noted

1) There was no instruction inside the lift for dealing with Emergency.THE EMERGENCY ALARM WAS NONOPERATIONAL.

2)The staff was completely unaware about individuals action incase of any emergencies .

3) The Manager was probably not in the list of people to be informed in a distressed situation OR may be the LAST one..

4) Ventilation was shut off with steel doors sealing any air movement.

5)Mobile network not present.

6) No drills carried out .

7)The lift maintenance person was himself not aware of emergency functions, he was of the  opinion that one could speak from inside the lift, which provision is not available.

Activities in the shopping market was going on as usual without anyone from the staff taking any corrective action and treating this as an emergency matter.

It is important to note that on the same day an hour earlier  two ladies had earlier Complained ABOUT THE LIFT DOOR NOT OPENING.

I am writing this to make some positive changes in our day to day way of thinking and make a better LIFE . I will be interested to know  what action has been taken by the TOP MANAGEMENT to avoid such incidents in future as a policy  .

SAFE BUISNESS IS GOOD BUISNESS.
